Act One Post

In a Doll's house, there are lot of things going on and as we keep reading we keep finding out more and more things. In Act One, you can immediately acknowledge Helmer’s attitude and beliefs towards Nora and other characters. As we can see he treats Nora like a little girl and controls her. However, he expresses a strong belief against lies and the idea of borrowing money. There are two quotes that caught my attention when reading that I must give my insight upon. Helmer says to Nora, “My little song bird musn’t ever do that again. A song bird must have a clear voice to sing with, no false notes”. When he says this to Nora he is referring to her frivolous lie about Krogstad seeing her earlier at the house earlier when he saw him leave. Helmer clearly shows how he dislikes Nora lying about anything and that he wouldn’t appreciate her doing it.

The second quote is “Because an atmosphere of lies, like that, infects and poisons the whole life of a home”. Helmer incredulously expresses this thought to Nora about Krogstad’s deceitful act of forging. He shows such disbelief and is disgusted of how he is able to actually lie to his family. He mentions that he is probably that way because of his mother’s bad upbringing. He says that it’s a mother who influences or corrupts their children. This worries Nora because she realizes she is all tangled up and is now seeing her husband’s true feelings about certain matters that she is actually involved in. I am anxious to find out how Nora will get out of this situation. For the truth is always revealed sooner or later!

  1. I like the second quote you added, I put that one up too. I like the way you analyzed the situation between characters. I didn't really pay mind to that I just analyzed the characters who related to me or annoyed me.
